- There are two groups of powder post beetles: (anobiids) damage hard and soft woods, lyctid beetles attack only hardwoods.
- Carpenter bees are large, solitary bees that bore tunnels into exposed, unpainted or weathered softwoods.
- Carpenter bee damage is usually cosmetic.
